Pie and Cake Day has been our tradition for 25 years, and this time our team decided it called for a full-scale operation. For our 25th anniversary, we assembled a crew, studied the blueprints, and planned a heist with a quarter century of desserts on the line.

We needed a full crew. A job this size was never going to be a one-person operation, so we brought in specialists. One crew member only needed 60 seconds with any lock in the house and pointed out that harder deals get closed before lunch. Another arrived with three cover stories ready to go. The new guy showed up apologizing, since it was his first heist.

As for the pay, it was the same as it is every year. The crew gets paid in pies and cakes, which one of us rightly called the best job in Dallas.

The plan had a cover. Inside the house sat every cake and every pie from 25 years of the good stuff, and tonight it was going to be ours. Standing in the way were a locked room, a keypad, and maybe a laser or two if luck wasn’t on our side.

For a team of real estate agents, a locked room and a keypad are just a Tuesday. If anyone happened to be home, we’d simply be agents looking at a listing like any other day. There was one more rule, too. Whatever we took, we’d leave a decoy behind.

“You are what makes this the sweetest score.”

Close calls didn’t stop the job. Once the cameras were looped and the hallway was clear, Operation Buttercream was a go. Someone came home partway through; the crew made a strong recovery, and we were left with 60 seconds until the next showing.

The lasers got complicated when baby wanted in on the job, and our closer nearly became the trigger. Still, the closer and baby finished what they started, and the decoys got set.

The real job was thanking clients. The heist may have been one person’s idea, but after 25 years and a few thousand clients, the credit belongs to all of us. Today we get to thank them the best way we know how, by stealing pies and cakes. Officially, we’re calling it client appreciation, since it reads better on the paperwork.

If you’d like a pie or cake of your own, don’t forget to RSVP for Pie and Cake Day. Orders close at 6:00 p.m. on November 16, and pickup is November 24 at The Clara Hotel in Plano. For any questions, call us at (214) 267-9222, email us at Seychellesells@vanpoole.com, or visit dallasarealiving.com.
